The 2nd Annual Seneca Creek State Park Duathlon should have beennamed Murphy's Law Duathlon. For a large variety of reasons whatever could have gone wrong that day and the week before did. The reasons are many and are the results of a whole bunch of strangeness.

Starting with two weeks before the race, Seneca Creek placed those speed bumps on the course without our knowledge and made it necessary for us to totally revamp the course to avoid as many of the bumps as possible. This made us be forced to change the second run to a route that obviously did not work very well. We could not redo the first run since there would have been many crossovers between bikers and runners and the original course had to be totally scrapped so that bikers and runners would not be on the same stretch of road at the same time. The only way for us to get in a second run is to go in the opposite direction of the bike course and have it double back on itself. Next, two of our workers directed the first seven runners the wrong way on the second run, but luckily that did not affect any results. At the finish line, for some reason, our timers (who have been doing this for years) decided to collect tags and record race numbers into the computer seperately for men and women. Why, I don't know. But since we were keeping a running time and then would adjust for the wave start seperately, it really screwed up the final times.

As we stated earlier, there were many people who only did two laps on the bike (53 were eliminated from final standings). For whatever reason, it was their responsiblility to do all three laps. If they had just dropped out of the race at that point, life would have been good, but they decided they wanted to do the last run. (I called two of these people and it seemed as if they were runners who just wanted to try a duathlon and realized that they couldn't do the whole bike thing, but really wanted to run!) Since they came through the finish line and allowed our timers to register them, we had to go through every single persons split individually to determine if they had completed three laps. In addition, we had people change relay partners before the race changing their relay type and not notifying us, people giving their race number to someone else, even though that person was a different sex and age, people not going thru the timing tent even when instructed to (I just don't understand some people) and other such stuff.

So all in all, I have spent (along with my wife and two other people) approximately 20+ hours trying to fix all this in the past week. Whether you agree or not, I have decided just to forget about the times altogether and list the placings. If we spent another 20+ hours working on this, I'm sure we would still have many mistakes and then have to spend another 20+ hours fixing them.

I apologize for all this, but sometimes stuff happens. Unfortunately, it all happened on the same day for us. Just one or two things from me. Please take time to read the return package and the application and waiver that you sign and agree to. It states emphatically that you are responsible for knowing the course beforehand. That means drive it or bike it. Read the rules about pets, parking and when you can leave. If you don't read the info, make sure you understand what you are talking about before you get onto a chat room. If you have a complaint, call me or email me about it, don't go on a chat room anomously and rip the race and me apart. A couple of people who did were the ones who only did two laps. There are people who spend a lot of time setting these things up for some people to make up stories on newsgroups and then not even sign their name. We'll look for a different site for next year's race in the area that will make many of these problems disappear. I apologize again and hope to see you next year.
